Maxiprocesso di Palermo is the
Maxiprocesso di Palermo is the denomination that was given, at the journalistic level, to a criminal trial celebrated in Palermo for mafia crimes (but the exact name of the criminal organization is Cosa nostra), including murder, drug trafficking, extortion, association mafia and others.
The maxiprocesso owes its nickname to its enormous proportions: at first instance the defendants were 475 (then dropped to 460 during the trial), with about 200 defense lawyers. The first degree trial ended with heavy sentences: 19 life sentences and prison sentences for a total of 2665 years of imprisonment. After a detailed procedure, these sentences were then almost all confirmed by the Cassation. As far as we know, this is the largest criminal trial ever held in the world.
It lasted from 10 February 1986 (day of commencement of the first instance trial) to 30 January 1992 (day of the final judgment of the Court of Cassation). However, often by maxiprocesso we mean the only first instance trial, which lasted until 16 December 1987.
