A bizarre, unique mountain world, formed over millions of years by wind and water, rises thirty kilometres southeast of Dresden. The Elbe Sandstone Mountains are famous for their extraordinary wealth of forms and for their sandstone, formed from a huge slab of marine sediment.

For centuries, sandstone as a historical building material has shaped the image of Dresden, the capital of Saxony. The magnificent baroque buildings - the Frauenkirche, the Semper Opera House and the Zwinger - are all made of Elbe sandstone. After the city was completely destroyed in the Second World War, it is now almost resplendent again after decades of reconstruction. No easy undertaking: The reconstruction of the historic loop ribbed vault in the Residence Palace was previously considered impossible by builders from all over Europe. But in the end, the experts succeeded with the help of old building plans.
