Police attended only 60% of shoplifting incidents involving violence against staff, despite promising to respond to every crime scene.

The National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) reviewed 31 out of 44 police forces in England and Wales and found most still failed to attend every violent incident or cases where a suspect was detained.

Only seven forces met the target of attending 100% of such incidents. The pledge was made after retailers complained that staff stopped reporting crimes because "police would never show up."

The NPCC examined 1,514 shoplifting crimes involving violence or detained suspects from December 1 to January 24. They reported these findings to the Home Affairs Select Committee.

The NPCC also found that 76% of incidents where suspects were detained by security staff were attended by police, with nine forces hitting this target.
