Japan’s cabinet approved a boost in defence budget that will bring the annual spending to over $53 billion for the very first time. Japan’s defence budget hike comes amid China’s rapid military expansion and US’ requests for a military upgrade. The hike in military spending makes the defence budget equal to 1.14% of last fiscal year’s GDP. Japan is surrounded by hostile neighbours, China and North Korea, that can emerge as a big threat to Tokyo. Japan is seeking to accelerate its deployments in the Pacific and the East China Sea to counter its hostile neighbours.
