How does Regen Braking work?

If you’ve driven an EV before, this is that braking sensation you get when you let off the accelerator, before actually pressing the brake pedal.

So first let's look at a traditional car. You're travelling down the road and see a stop sign up ahead. You let off the gas pedal, so you're no longer putting energy into the car to make it move, but it still has kinetic energy as it slows down. You could let the car keep rolling until it stops on its own, but that is not very practical. So you press on the brake, and in most cars this presses a set of brake pads around a disc attached to the wheel that slow you down using friction. We've been using it in cars for over a hundred years, and it works great at stopping cars moving at high speeds.

EVs on the other hand, have a built in braking system native to the actual electric motor itself.

Without getting into all of the complicated physics of an electric motor, there are a few things you should know. The non-moving or stationary part of the motor is called the stator, and the moving part, or the part that actually moves the car is called the rotor. When current is pushed through the stator, it creates a magnetic field that causes the rotor to move.

So when you press on the accelerator in an EV, you're essentially just sending current from the battery pack to the stator.

But when you let off the accelerator, and your car is still moving, the rotor continues to move inside the motor, even though you're not pushing on the pedal. This causes current to flow in the opposite direction and charge the battery. So the motor actually acts as a generator to harness that excess kinetic energy. Normally that energy would just be wasted as heat from friction on the brake pads, this is a part of why EV brakes don't wear out as easily, because you rarely need to use them.

So this has a lot of advantages beyond just brake wear. Because you aren’t wasting that energy, this actually extends your range. Most of the EPA estimates of range you see with electric cars include regen braking. This is why EVs are awesome in stop and go traffic, but less so on highways unless its really hilly.

Beyond that you also get one-pedal driving. With regen braking you can come to almost a complete stop without pressing the brake, so it simplifies driving only worrying about one pedal. Some people don’t like that, but once you get driving for a bit you very quickly see the advantages.
