I’m standing here with you, sheriff, in this abandoned mall where people keep getting killed, looking at yet another body, and you’re asking me if I’m okay.
Am I okay? How could I be okay? It was only yesterday that I held this woman in my arms.
I took her here at the crack of dawn. The aisles inside were cool and softly lit. I thought the two of us had it made in the shade. All of a sudden it was like I’d been frame-frozen in a film, the lady eyeing me curiously. Then—wham! I found myself halfway to Wilmington.
Let me tell you, sheriff. I knew when I took this gig I was entering a country where the rules I’d governed my life by would be swept under the rug. Say what you will about the mystery of this place, but it was clear from the get-go this storefront was going to be my last stop.
I’m a grown man, and I can’t do anything else to make a buck. That means I’m doomed to spend the rest of my life trotting down those ratty stairs to your makeshift morgue, pointing at dead ladies like her.
This place is supposed to be about fantasy, not horror. If I could see one good year, three hundred and sixty-five days and nights when everyone’s dreams came true, when no one got dealt the hangman, I’d trade away twenty of my own, like that!
