Announcer: Local 10 News starts right now.

Kristi Krueger: In today's Healthcast, so what's old is new again, in the world of hair loss anyway. Minoxidil, that's the drug that's been around really for decades, was originally prescribed orally for blood pressure, but patients started to grow hair, so the FDA approved a topical version specifically for people with hair loss. Dr. Alan Bauman says it's also still used orally in low doses to help with hair growth as well.

Dr. Alan Bauman: As a topical, it worked good, you had to be consistent with it. Some people didn't respond well, some people, it messed up the hair style, could end up with inflammation on the scalp and caused other side effects, so sometimes topical minoxidil is not a great idea.

KK: So the doctor goes on to say, while the low dose oral version does cost far less than the topical one, it does indeed come with some risks and patients need to be closely monitored by a doctor to make sure that none of those side effects actually take place.

What is Oral Minoxidil?
Originally available in a topical version (Rogaine), minoxidil has been prescribed orally off-label in a “micro” or low dose for hair growth. Doctors around the world, including Dr. Alan Bauman at Bauman Medical, have been prescribing and studying the effects of micro-dose / low-dose oral minoxidil on hair regrowth in men and women for many years. Recently, interest has significantly increased regarding low-dose minoxidil after articles appeared in NY Times entitled “An Old Medicine Grows New Hair…” and in GQ, “What Guys With Thinning Hair Should Know About Off-Label Hair Growth Prescriptions.”
