In this guitar lesson, we're exploring 3 note per string guitar scales and learning the most efficient way to get 3 note per string into your playing.
Three note per string (also known as 3nps) is exactly what it describes - guitar scale patterns in which there are 3 notes to each of the six strings. In this guitar tutorial, we're focusing on the C major scale.
The major scale has seven notes and so there are seven different 3 note per string scales that you need to memorize.
The shortcut to doing so is the Pattern Cycle. Essentially it's a sequence of scale intervals in ascending perfect fourths. Fourths are very important for guitar in that it's the distance between five of the six string pairs.
Stage 1 is to learn the 3 note groupings found in the major scale on a single string. There are only three different fingering combinations to memorize.
Stage 2 is to combine two of these 3 note groupings to create a 6-note scale pattern. The Pattern Cycle can serve as a shorthand to knowing which 2 groupings are found together.
Stage 3 is combining the 2 string groupings across all six strings. The Pattern Cycle will inform you of the order of each fingering pattern as you change strings.
Look out for the fingering pattern being raised one fret each time you hit string 2(B).
The Pattern Cycle will loop indefinitely up the fretboard if you jump directly from string 2(B) to 6(E) and avoid the doubling of the fingering patterns on strings 1(E) and 6(E).
