The most important molecule needed for the formation of the membrane is a particular type of lipid; known as phospholipids.

Phospholipids have a polar phosphate head, and 2 non-polar fatty acid tails, making it a peculiar molecule that is both water soluble and water insoluble.

Because of this peculiarity, it is able to form the phospholipid bilayer, which is the fundamental structure of cell membranes.
