Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet wanted practical effects for the scene in which the Newborn is sucked through a small hole in a window into space. He wanted the head to be the final image, first stripped of skin and then the skull shattering as it disappeared into space. That was a whole lotta' Newborn to make disappear. Here are the first tests that, despite the shaky wall mock-up, had us moving in the right direction. A network of wires attached to a pre-scored skin went first, followed by a pre-scored and delicate skull rigged with an even more complex spiderweb of wires to shatter and pull pieces through the hole. And then... what better way to end this video by spilling our guts...
