Driving efficiency is the key to ensuring the longevity and sustainability of your manufacturing business and to becoming a smart factory of the future, but it’s not an easy task. Phoenix Contact’s energy monitoring project at their US headquarters was not without challenges, but the payoffs in creating sustainability were certainly worth the effort. Take a look at how we did it.

Transcript: - [Narrator] In the world of manufacturing, uptime and productivity are the typical benchmarks for success. Reliable machines that have been churning out quality products for decades are trusted with unwavering faith. After all, if it ain't broke, why fix it? But in the 21st century, manufacturers who resist new technology and automation are putting their business at risk. Phoenix Contact just celebrated its 100-year anniversary. And the secret to our success is our passion for technology and the everlasting desire to continuously make things better. Driving efficiency is the key to ensuring the longevity and sustainability of your manufacturing business, and to becoming a smart factory of the future. That's where data comes in. Imagine having the power to obtain, monitor, and analyze data from your machines in real time. Let us show you how we did it at our US manufacturing center in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The first goal was to collect energy consumption data from the machines in our manufacturing plant. Utilizing our own products was essential to complete our goal. Electrical energy monitors were hooked up to several machines to collect data reports on daily energy consumption. We began by monitoring three of our production machines, the VIP slice machine, wave soldering machine, and the SMT line. Next, we needed a solution to harvest the information from these machines. The EMpro was selected to monitor the wave solder and VIP slice machines. EMpro energy measuring devices can be configured and integrated into a network in minutes, and it provided a straightforward method for measuring single-source power. Installation was simple and the EMpro can also monitor the entire machine. The surface mount technology or SMT machine required a higher-level solution that was implemented using an MQTT broker and products including our PLCnext controller and Axioline power monitoring modules to gain a complete picture of the whole line. Our monitoring and collection efforts are only valuable if we take the time to study the data, and identify insights in operations or possible faults. The information also has to be readily available on our internal network for any groups that would want to use it in their applications. For example, production supervisors may want to chart energy usage for predictive maintenance, while the plant manager may want to use it for cost analysis. All the data we collect can then drive our decisions.

- So I believe the goal of our energy monitoring project is to collect the data that we are getting off the shop floor and use that information to make intelligent decisions for our manufacturing processes, and make energy saving in conscious efforts to reduce those energy footprints that we currently have now.

- [Narrator] This is what energy monitoring can help us do:
Digitize and create value with existing assets, ensure uptime and reduce costs and complexities with predictive maintenance, improve scheduling and streamline workflows, access dashboarding and analytics anytime, better allocate human tasks and responsibilities, identify supply chain issues, improve system interoperability, avoid data silos and stovepipe architectures, and create database decision models. Now- how can we help you? Join us as we explore the new frontier of energy monitoring to promote efficient and sustainable manufacturing for all.--
