Two years have passed since the bombing of the "black" nest. Artyom, who married Melnik's daughter Anna, returns to "VDNKh" after a short service in the Order. However, he fails to return to his former life at the station. Under the influence of remorse for his involvement in the destruction of the "blacks" he gets the idea to find on the surface traces of survivors outside the Moscow subway. Every day he goes to the surface with a heavy army radio station in his rucksack and climbs on foot to the roof of one of the nearby "Tricolor" high-rises, attempting to make radio contact with the survivors. His confidence is fueled by the memory of the call signs vaguely heard through the interference in the radio of Order Ulman's fighter during their ascent to the Ostankino TV tower two years ago.
