Groups and subgroups

Jacob explains the fundamental concepts in group theory of what groups and subgroups are, and highlights a few examples of groups you may already know. Abelian groups are named in honor of Niels Henrik Abel (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niels_Henrik_Abel), who pioneered the subject of group theory. They're called abelian, rather than commutative, to allow for distinguishment between the commutativity of multiple operations, when sets are equipped with multiple operations in more complex group-like structures found in more advanced abstract algebra topics.
