This video is an ABAQUS tutorial showing how a composite with voids can be modelled within ABAQUS using RVE modelling approach. To bring to life the problem considered, we have used a fictitious character called David, a young company executive within a material testing laboratory. David was tasked with determining the impact of voids on the effective properties of a batch of composite delivered to the lab for testing. This video is a possible approach that he can take.

The composite modelled here is a unidirectional composite with an E-glass fibre reinforcement within a polypropylene matrix. The voids are spherical in shape and are dispersed randomly within the matrix. Uniaxial transverse to fibre axis deformation were undertaken on two cases: (1) voided and (b) non-voided RVEs of the test composite. The RVE used here is a cubic RVE.

The virtual domains of the model were created using two python scripts. After the simulation, contour plots for the two RVE types were assessed for insights on the effect of the void morphology on mechanics of the composite. Also, stress-stress data and effective material properties (Young's modulus and Strength) of the test composite were generated for objective conclusions on the effect of voids on the composite mechanics. The study concluded that voids do affect the behaviour of the composite and where such exist, and a detrimental effect of mechanical properties can be determined, then the voided composite has to be discarded.  #cmvideos #abaqus #rvemodelling #udcomposites
