This is an original Sousa Recording, most of them are among the earliest complete commercial records ever produced.
"The President's Own" United States Marine Band was created by Congress in 1798 under President John Adams. The institution was already nearly a century old when one of America's greatest composers, John Philip Sousa, took over its direction. In 1890 he lead the Band on a world tour that made it the most popular musical ensemble in the world, and prompted critics to give Sousa the title of: "The March King".
This is that original band.
The recordings were originally produced for "The Columbia Phonograph Company of Washington, D.C." and were transferred by the United States Marine Corp. for public enjoyment under the supervision of Colonel Jason K. Fettig, the band's current director.
Every banged - up old heap on the highway was once a shiny, new car, and the same is true for these ancient recordings. They were once new, and sounded new. After 130 years of dirt and wear they sound much different than they did when young. In this project the effort is to restore them, as closely as possible, to their original sound. Their musical and historic value is immeasurable.
This is not artificial stereo.
These are acoustic recordings, which captured the entire acoustic environment in which they were made. When they were played back on original acoustic equipment, they reproduced just as they were made. Stereo was later developed to recapture this quality in electrical recordings. This is how they originally sounded on an early phonograph.
This is the first recording of "The Liberty Bell" ever made. Many thanks to the U.S. Marine Corp. for making it available.
