The Winter War lasted for three months in the winter between 1939 and 1940, when the Soviet Union invaded Finland. Simo Hayha was a farmer from Finland who went into service during the war.

Prior to the war, Hayha finished a year-long military practice where he was the top marksman and received many trophies for his ability.

During the war, Hayha used many tactics to be more successful: he didn’t use the sniper scope, because the reflection from sun could give him away. He ate snow to avoid making steamy breath. Hayha would also let some of the soldiers pass freely so that he could murder generals.

During the 100 days of the war, Hayha got 505 confirmed sniper kills, which makes him the most successful sniper in history and it also gave him a nickname from the Russians – the White Death.

The end of the war nearing, Hayha was hit in the face and spent the last ten days of the war in coma. The bullet blew off his cheek, but Hayha lived to be 96, dying in 2002.
