The Mackenzie Valley Wolf (Canis Lupus Occidentalis) is the largest living wolf sub-specie in the world. Also known as the Northwestern Wolf or Canadian Timber Wolf. These giant wolves roam the northwest, frequenting the Mackenzie River Valley and are also prevalent in Yellowstone National Park, where they play the important role of keeping the Elk population in check.
Weight: Up to 175 pounds
Length: 5 to 7 feet
Location: Alaska and Western Canada
Estimated population: 7,000 – 10,000
Mackenzie Valley Wolves are considered to be the largest-bodied wolf subspecies as compared to their lankier cousins. Their hefty build gives them a slightly stockier and more rounded appearance than other types of wolves. These wolves have especially sturdy limbs and large lungs adapted for breathing at higher altitudes.
In ancient times also over 10,000 years ago, the Canis dirus, or the dire wolf, were large wolves and were 25% heavier than the modern gray wolf (Canis lupus). The largest known dire wolf specimens were found in the Aucilla River region of north Florida.
