Project 52 Varanus mertensi with long tongue

It is always good to see some of our Top End monitors as they have been badly decimated after the arrival of the introduced toxic cane toad. Somehow this specimen at the Howard Springs Nature Park has avoided the carnage. They are a truly magnificent animal, moving at a leisurely pace when exploring but are lightning fast in attack.
