Each year the US Holocaust Memorial Museum trains staff, interns and volunteers to become tour guides for youth and professional groups visiting its permanent exhibition.

Trainees gain knowledge of historical content accuracy, pertinence of subject matter to conveying an effective tour, how to effectively convey cohesiveness of content, audience engagement with questions/interaction, artifact/film footage/photo usage, how to transition from exhibit to exhibit, and the use of recurring themes throughout the exhibition.

Methodology is varied throughout the course to accommodate different learning styles.  Participants will engage in discussions, historical content lectures, tour observations, group activities, independent work, reading assignments and practice tours.

Upon completion of the tour guide training course and in exchange for 45 hours of training, the new guide should commit to tour at least 26 times over the course of a year. This translates to one tour every two weeks over the course of 12 months. Most tours take place on weekdays between 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. The museum's leadership programs team provides tours for visiting groups that are relatively new to the history of the Holocaust -- primarily Washington, DC area high schools and law enforcement, judicial, and military groups.  Becoming a tour guide is an excellent way to learn more about the Holocaust, the Museum's Permanent Exhibition, and our local community.  It is both challenging and rewarding.

Please contact James Fleming, Program Coordinator -- Youth and Community Initiatives [email protected] if you are interested or have any questions about the tour programs and/or training.
