Pat Martino was one of the world's best guitar teachers and players.

I have immense respect for Pat Martino and highly recommend his linear expressions book for all avid students of jazz guitar!

The gist of how it works:

"You play a LINEAR EXPRESSION (or a line) using a modified Dorian or Melodic Minor with chromaticsim. This becomes your weapon for performing over chord changes."

The lines are minor.

So: Let us use the Bb Minor Line as our point of reference.

We can then play:

* Bb minor 7 - play a minor line on I or on Bb!
* Eb7 - play a minor line on V or on Bb
* G Minor 7b5 - play a minor line on bIII or Bb
* A7#5 (or altered) - play the minor line on bII or Bb
* C13b9 - play the minor line on bVIII
* Ab Major 7 - play the minor line on II
* Db Major 7 - play the minor line on VI

The study above needs to be taken very seriously and you need to extensively study the relationships between chords/degrees and what is happening.

For example on C13b9 by playing the Bb minor line or let us call it Bb Melodic Minor we are really playing the C Dorian b2 scale OR the second mode of the melodic minor.

If this sounds complex... IT IS NOT... but you need to just wrap your head around it.

The  C Dorian b2 scale can be seen as a C13b9#9 chord WITHOUT a third. The minor 3rd of the Dorian scale with a Tritone in the accompaniment becomes a #9 tension.

Anyways... if this all sounds like a lot... get in touch... let us schedule a meeting online - I can explain it ✔

As always thank you for watching and wishing you all a MERRY Christmas ahead!
