Today I Interviewed Ben Urban,
Today I Interviewed Ben Urban, who grew up exposed to cultural Christianity, but eventually made it his own faith and became a Christian. After going to seminary in preparation for ministry, he got exposed to the darker sides of Christianity, and his deconstruction began.
As we unpacked his story, we talked about:
• Feeling called to go to seminary and become a pastor
• Being exposed to Southern Baptist theology and ideology, especially their focus on hell and their fight against homosexuality.
• The absurdity of God choosing some people for heaven and letting the rest go to hell.
• How spending time in the Bible made it more clear that something with that worldview is wrong.
• Realizing that Christianity is a cult.
• Rethinking the teaching on hell.
• Starting to question everything.
• The closed-mindedness of conservative evangelical Christianity.
• How education should teach you how to think, not what to think.
• Realizing that the Bible is not inerrant.
• How Christians are into fringe ideas like blood magic.
• The bizarreness of the Bible's teaching about how to create potions made of dust water to cause a forced abortion, and about dashing babies heads against rocks.
• How Christianity borrowed heavily from the book of Enoch and syncretized from Zoroastrianism and other religions.
• How Christianity arbitrarily picked certain parts of its mythology to declare "orthodox."
• The dynamics of spiritual humanism.
• The beauty of teaching our children to explore the world and existence without threatening them with eternal punishment if they don't agree with our worldview.
• The emotional fallout that sometimes accompanies deconstruction.
• Recovering our identity after breaking down toxic paradigms.
• The importance of thinking for ourselves.
• How amazing community is when it is inclusive.
• Becoming a catalyst for others to have the bravery to escape religion.
