MESA/Boogie Mark Five: 25 Ch. 2 XTREME Mode – Metal

The Mesa Tone Sessions kicks off with a Northern Bay Area local progressive rock / groove metal band called Autonomist playing the song “Majestic” through the XTREME mode of Ch. 2 in the Mark Five 25 head. This song and Shaun (left) and Aaron’s (right) playing showcases the XTREME modes ability to deliver massive, crisp gain while still remaining tight and punchy in low frequencies, especially with extended range guitars. The three higher sliders of the Graphic EQ were used to fine tune the harmonic content and gain layering in the high end and midrange frequencies for each players preferred tone and cut in a band mix. Perhaps more importantly, the lower bands of the Graphic EQ were adjusted to tune the low end response for tightness and articulation of the low string of 7-string guitars.
Both guitars were recorded with bridge position humbuckers (Shaun - EMG 57 ~ Aaron/Right EMG 707X) into the XTREME mode of Ch. 2 in the Mark Five 25 through 2x12 Rectifier Vertical cabs loaded with Celestion Vintage 30s. Jim Dunlop Carbon Copy Analog delays were used during the solos and clean sections.
Speakers were mic’d with a Shure SM57, Shure KSM313 and the Closed Back Cab Simulation of the built-in CabClone and mixed with 50% KSM313, 30% SM57 and 20% CabClone.
