Mercedes-Benz CLS 400d - was it a mistake?

This is the Mercedes-Benz CLS 400d. Mercedes just got it right, the CLS is a stunning machine but was is a mistake to fit the CLS with a diesel engine?  Under the bonnet of the CLS 400d, we have  a 2.9L diesel, straight 6 that pumps 340 hp and 700 Nm of torque.
