This special compilation features opens from "Independent Network News," a syndicated news program produced by WPIX in New York City from 1980 to 1990. The "Independent Network News" title was de-emphasized around 1984, with the program being renamed "INN: The Independent News"; the "INN" name was de-emphasized further in 1987 (outside of lower-thirds), in favor of renaming the program "USA Tonight". Under its new name, "USA Tonight" lasted until 1990, its cancellation reportedly was due to a decrease in independent stations available to carry the program (although there were still quite a number of independents left around the U.S. during the period between when Fox debuted in October 1986 until The WB and UPN launched in January 1995). The program used the same anchors as those seen on WPIX's primetime newscasts, and until 1984 and again from 1989 to 1990, featured logos for the program that replaced WPIX logos on various set pieces. Of course, "INN" wasn't the last news program to have been distributed through syndication as programs like "This Morning's Business," "First Business" and presently "The Daily Buzz" would come on to the scene in subsequent years; in fact, WPIX was the original producer of "The Wall Street Journal Report" (which eventually came under the guidance of CNBC) and Tribune now syndicates a morning program on some of its CW and MyNetworkTV affiliates called "EyeOpener".
