In Yeldeğirmeni, the settlement accelerated in the second half of 1800s, and especially after the Jews settled in the neighborhood, apartmentization started. Yeldeğirmeni can also be called the first apartment district of Istanbul. Because Cihangir, which is the only distinct district that we can accept as the apartment district where the houses are located, was formed long after the proclamation of the Republic.
Four windmills were built by the sultan Abdulhamit I between 1774 and 1789 in this residential area, which was written to exist in the 15th and 16th centuries with garden gardens. The name of the district comes from these windmills that were established to meet the need for flour.
Yeldeğirmeni was an area that remained in Haydarpaşa Meadow before settling. This is why the names of buildings such as synagogues, churches and schools in the old buildings in Yeldeğirmeni begin with the word Haydarpaşa.
In addition, the establishment of the first settlement of Kadıköy, Kalkedon, BC. It is known to be in 675 years. It is known that the walls built to protect the city of Kalkedon at that time passed through Yeldeğirmeni, Altıyol and Yogurtçu.
