In this video, Anthony Sequeira and Scott Morris will cover the key concepts behind Routing Information Protocol version 2 (RIPv2). RIPv1 had a well-deserved reputation for poor performance, and unfortunately, many of these issues are still around in version 2. Using a five-network topology, they’ll outline what you can expect from RIPv2.

Anthony and Scott dig into the second version of Routing Information Protocol, focusing primarily on reviewing the crucial concepts you’ll need to know. The first is the Hop Count, a holdover from RIPv1 that chooses the best path through the network. This is widely frowned upon because it doesn’t take bandwidth into consideration at all, which can lead to several issues. He also notes that version 2 utilizes a broadcast approach to propagating UDP packet information. Finally, RIP uses a 30-second advertisement interval, which tends to be frowned upon because it’s considered to be a very chatty protocol. Even if there’s no change in topology that will trigger an update, RIP will still advertise what it knows to its neighboring router twice every minute. Despite RIP’s shortcomings, this video will give you a quick overview of its major features.
