The Gretsch G2622T and G2420 are both very affordable guitars from Gretsch. They look great and have lots of vintage character. I think they represent great value for money, but which ones should you get? What are the main differences between the two guitars?

These guitars have more similarities than differences. They're both made in Indonesia. Both guitars feature a laminated maple body with a laurel fingerboard. They both have the same pickups and controls. The most obvious difference (apart from the colour) is the tremolo system on the G2622T. But I should point out that both models are available both with and without the Bigsby tremolo system which is made under licence in Indonesia.

The most significant difference in practical terms is the fact that the G2420 is fully hollow, which is unusual for an electric guitar. The G2622T is semi-hollow, meaning that there's a solid block running through the middle, which is standard for most hollow bodied electric guitars. The fully hollow body on the G2420 will lead to feedback problems when you amplify it at loud volumes, or when you add distortion. So the G2622T is a much more practical choice for playing at louder volumes.

I love the G2420, even though it's impractical at loud volumes. For me, it's a really good budget option for a jazz guitar. Even though it isn't set up for playing jazz when you buy it. All you need to do is put a set of jazz guitar strings on it. I put the Thomastik 12-50 flatwound strings on, and it immediately felt to me like a better guitar. It had a thicker tone and the tuning stability was much improved.

Both of these guitars benefit from heavier strings. They both come with 10-46 roundwound strings, which feel too light for vintage style guitars like these. And I'm not someone that usually uses heavy strings, but the character of these guitars suits the sound of heavier strings. And more importantly, if you're going to buy a T guitar with the Bigsby on it, heavier strings will make the tuning more stable.
