In today's episode, we venture towards the Mexico border and explore Patagonia Lake State Park in Nogales, Arizona. To celebrate Glenn's birthday we decided to rent one of the available pontoon boats and take it for a spin for four hours. While cruising the lake, we stopped at some of the available boat-in campsites and take a quick tour to see what is included. All in all, it was a great day spent at a very new location for us!
Patagonia Lake State Park is located in southern Arizona near the Mexican border. From Tucson, simply follow I-19 south, and take Arizona State Route 82 back north towards the park.
Patagonia lake is 2.5 miles long and has 250 acres. Canoes, rowboats, paddleboats, and pontoon boats are available for rent. One popular activity is fishing where largemouth bass, catfish, and rainbow trout are common. Swimming is allowed in designated areas at one's own risk as there is no lifeguard. A roped-off swim area is available near Boulder Beach. The east side of the lake is a no-wake zone whereas the west side is not - speed is unlimited in a counter-clockwise direction. Personal Water Craft (PWCs), jet-skis, waterbikes, above-water exhausts boats, and V-8 jet boats are all prohibited.
Camping is another popular activity at the park for both RVs and tent camping. 105 sites are available that include 20/30 amp and 50 amp voltage hookups and can accommodate any size RV. All of these sites come standard with a picnic table and fire ring with a grill cover. Several of these sites include a ramada.
In addition to these sites, there are also 12 boat-in sites that also include a picnic table and fire ring/grill. Boats are available to rent to access these sites if one does not have their own. These sites are a great option if one wants to be close to the water and have more privacy. In fact, two of the campsites are their own private islands!
If tent camping or RV life isn't for you, there are also a number of cabins available to rent. Each cabin comes with heating and air-conditioning, a queen-sized bed, several bunk beds, a table, chairs, microwave, mini-fridge, and electricity. Guests will need to bring their own bedding. Outside, each site includes a picnic table, barbeque grill as well as fire ring. Toilets and showers are not included, but a short walk from the cabins.
