Maroon Wars and Peace Treaties

As more enslaved Africans came to the island, this resulted in more slaves escaping the plantations. This led to the increase in Maroon settlements.

Maroon communities were seen as a constant threat to the Authorities on the island. Maroons were known for their skilful tactics in combat, great knowledge of their environment and outwitting their attackers. These strategists were a force to be reckoned with.

With Maroon communities growing and being a constant plague to the plantation owners with the many raids that took place, it led to several wars.
The maroons were classified by their regions, the Leeward Maroons and the Windward Maroons. Both sectors had strong leaders. Some of their leaders were Cudjoe, Nanny, Accompong, Quao and Cuffy.

The First Maroon War, which lasted for several years, led to a Peace treaty between the Maroons and the British. In seventeen thirty-nine, the treaties were signed by the Leader Cudjoe for the Leeward Maroons and later by Quao for the Windward Maroons.

The treaty recognized the maroons and accepted their land ownership. The maroons were allowed to govern themselves. This deal also ensured that the maroons would help with foreign invasions as well as to  capture and return runaway and rebel slaves.

The Second Maroon War was primarily with the Trelawney Town Maroons. There was nonstop fighting for several months. An agreement of peace was offered in seventeen ninety-five. However it was a trick, as when the maroons surrendered, the authorities captured and then transplanted them off the island. They were sent to Nova Scotia in Canada and then moved to Sierra Leone in West Africa.

To this day. there are still Maroon communities in Jamaica.
