Indonesia has embarked on an ambitious journey to move its capital from Jakarta to a new sustainable city called Nusantara. The bold decision for the capital shift from Java to East Kalimantan has raised the eyebrows of many. And yet, this has been a long time coming.
Today, Jakarta is too congested, steeped in pollution, and is rapidly sinking into the Java Sea. For President Joko Widodo (better known as Jokowi or Presiden Jokowi), it’s a no-brainer for the capital relocation to Nusantara. But are there other larger, hidden forces driving such a bold move? After all, Indonesia's new capital WON'T save sinking Jakarta... and it's not meant to.
