A crucial role of the Operations Manager is to arrange the equipment, machinery and staff in such a way to ensure its: Streamlined, Flows smoothly, Increases productivity, and Adheres to OHS. Key factors in Plant Layout: Enough space for the volume of production. Appropriate location of stock and inventory. Efficient flow of the product through the system. Three ways to arrange plant layout: Process layout, Product layout, and Fixed position layout. Process Layout: The machines and technology are grouped by their function. Deals with high variety and low volume. The production is intermittent. It moves from one department to another. Example: Hospitals have areas dedicated to a type of medical care – maternity, intensive care, Children etc. Banks are arranged to service the different needs of customers – mortgage, business, and insurance. Product layout: Machines and equipment are arranged to suit the sequence of operations. Workflows from station to station. Used in a high volume of standardised products. Seen in assembly lines. Operations managers set time targets for each stage of production. Example: Car Production. Technology and labour is lined up in the order of their input into the production process. The unfinished product moves around the plant floor. Fixed Position Layout: Project production. Large-scale bulky tasks. Fixed-position layout. The labour and machinery come to the product. The product remains in one location. Examples: Ships, Aircraft, Bridges and Houses
