American literary theorist and critic, he served as professor of humanities at Yale University (USA). Since the publication of his first book in 1959, he has written more than forty books on literary criticism and religion. Among his most outstanding works are: Shakespeare, the invention of the human; The western canon; How to read and Why; The future of the imagination, among others. His books have been translated into more than 40 languages.
