Imam Jamil Al Amin (H Rap Brown) was a civil rights activist during the sixties who became one of the leading voices in the black power movement.
He was arrested and imprisoned in 1971 for his revolutionary activities.
During his sentence (1971-1976), he converted to Islam and emerged as a Social Reformer.
He spent the next 25 years (1976-2000) in teaching an anti racism message and teaching that the real struggle for humanity was against ones own destructive inclinations and desires.
He started a movement that would establish mosques in African American neighborhoods and call people to Islam, establishing prayer and to spiritual elevation while leaving behind vices that affected the people in those areas.
The communities he established struggled to clean up their neighborhoods from vice and crime.
They defended themselves against Drug Mafias and Racketeers who were contributing to perpetuating a cycle of poverty, crime and violence.
In 2000 he was arrested and wrongfully convicted for a crime committed by another person, Mr Otis Jackson.
Mr Otis Jackson has confessed to the crime consistently for 20 years and has never retracted his statement. The confession was earlier available as a written statement.
Recently, video evidence of his confession has surfaced which has points which were not known before.
Based on this newly released evidence, a fresh attempt is being made to reopen the appeals case in the US Supreme Court and to that end, a signature campaign has been started to impress upon the court that there is community visibility on this issue.
