How to make a display the main display in Windows 10 is shown in this video - it is an update in 2022 from our original video. We demonstrate how to change the primary monitor in your set up using Windows 10. This - as part of a series of useful 'how-to' videos where we share a bunch of simple, yet very useful tips which are often overlooked. The videos are related to PC/Computer monitors & screens.
The matter of setting a primary display comes under the topic of a dual monitor setup - so it could be a dual screen setup for desktop computers or a dual screen setup using a laptop and an external monitor.
A Lenovo Tiny Mini-PC Thinkcentre M700, an older Dell IN2010N monitor and a JVC LT-24CM690BE monitor were used in this video.
The JVC LT-24CM690BE monitor will be designated the main primary display - using Windows 10. The Dell IN2010N - is the primary monitor currently.
There is often the thought that you need to make driver / cable changes to your setup, in order to change the primary displays. Or even move your monitors around. However, that's not the case. Just a few simple changes to your system settings will make the difference.
So why would anyone want to make the larger JVC monitor the main monitor? The primary / main monitor is the default monitor on which everything (apps/programs) are initially displayed on (generally) in Windows 10. This, in addition to, being able to lock the screen and sign-in to Windows. The primary monitor is also the place where you receive your notifications and have access to the taskbar functionality.
What appears on the primary display - at a glance?
* The lock screen option, switch user page, sign in / out
* Task manager screen (upon pressing ctrl-alt-del)
* The notification tray
* When opening apps / programs for the first time, they normally open on the main primary display.
It is key, therefore, to determine which monitor is your main / primary monitor - Windows set main monitor.
There may also be a variety of personal reasons for wanting to make the larger monitor, or the external monitor (when using a laptop as the other display) the primary display, including:
* Individuals may prefer to work on larger screens
* You're a gamer & require more screen space
* You undertake a lot of detailed work
* You do lots of cutting / pasting of data
* There could be a whole host of reasons.....
How to change primary monitor Windows 10 Monitor 1 to Monitor 2, follow these steps:
1. Click on search box with magnifying glass bottom left of screen
2. 'Type 'display' in search box
3. Select 'Duplicate or extend to a connected display'. The DISPLAY SETTINGS screen opens.
You can identify screen numbers, as allocated by Windows operating system, by clicking 'identify'. It shows the Dell IN2010N monitor as main monitor (screen 1). The JVC LT-24CM690BE display is monitor 2 - the secondary monitor, as shown in display settings.
4. Click on the monitor (icon) you want as the main display - highlighted in blue.
5. Scroll down to 'multiple displays'. Select 'make this my main display' - tick the box to implement this change.
Great - you should have just made your other display, the primary display!
