In this first episode, we introduced the Machine Learning Seminar at Helmholtz Centre Geesthacht. On the agenda today we had: 9:57 Tobias Weigel explains the High Level Support Team starting up there as part of the Helmholtz AI unit, and its role in providing support, training and infrastructure for ML. Presentation slides are available at doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3726571. 27:21 We discuss the paper "Hidden fluid mechanics: Learning velocity and pressure fields from flow visualizations," Raissi et al. 2020, Science. 1:12:18 We open up the discussion and plan for future meetings and topics. All potential participants are encouraged to share their interests and ideas. In particular I'm hoping to hear about opportunities for training and collaboration on ML/AI topics in Hamburg. 1:27:21 We carry on a more technical discussion of the math and programming behind the paper focusing on paper "Physics Informed Neural Networks," Raissi et al., 2019, J. Computational Physics. Additional useful links: Thanks to Eduardo Zorita for calling our attention to the ERA Intermin or NCEP: "These are reanalysis that incorporate all observations available at at certain point in time: satallite, station data, radiosondes, ships, etc. www.ecmwf.int/en/forecasts/datasets/reanalysis-dat… www.esrl.noaa.gov/psd/data/gridded/data.ncep.reana… In contrast, the Era20C and 20CR use only surface observations. One reason is that the cover a longer period (1900- or 1850- ) and they strive to produce a more or less homogenous data sets. Since in the 19th century and early 20th century there were only surface observations, the whole data set would be hghly non-homogeneous. These reanalysis have issues, mostly in areas were barely no observations were avaialble any way, but they are rather good, considering that they provide a reconstruction of e-g- upper tropospheric winds and temperature based only on a model and surface observations." www.esrl.noaa.gov/psd/data/20thC_Rean/ www.ecmwf.int/en/forecasts/datasets/reanalysis-dat…
