TO and FOR are two of the most commonly used prepositions, do you know their difference?
Though a lot of details, following simple rules can help you get most of their use cases right.

TO indicates the movement, direction and limitation.
For example:
I am going to school.
Susan gave an apple to me.
Plane flies up to 10,000 meters.

On the other hand,
FOR indicates duration, do something to help somebody, the way something is supposed to be used, etc.
Examples include:
He has been reading for 5 hours.
Jim bought the tickets for his girl friends.
This couch is for sitting.

TO and FOR can both be used to describe the motivation, at this time, TO is always used with a verb, whereas FOR is always used with a noun.
For example,
She came home to eat.
She came home for food.
