In English, some words are strong and others are weak. We say weak words quickly and quietly, with little emphasis. In contrast, we say strong words clearly and carefully.
CAN is a weak word, so we pronounce it like /k'n/. However, CAN'T is a negative word and negative words are strong, so it is pronounced clearly.
Ex: I can(/k'n/) dance at home, but I CAN'T dance in public. Listen at 0:54
Exception: In short sentences, CAN is stressed. For example, Yes, I CAN. Listen at 1:50
