If you flub the essential "why"of your memoir, your theme, your memoir will lack meaning! Theme is what you memoir is about—really about.

Articulating their memoir theme well distinguishes the people who succeed at writing a successful memoir from the people who don’t. Success often depends on how clearly they have conveyed their abiding belief in their message, their theme.
Theme is what a memoir is about. The person who completes a successful memoir often have done so because of their belief they have something to say that is to the benefit of the reader.
This something is articulated in their theme. It is their theme that enlivens them to write.
The writer’s theme will influence choices for every element in the story: plot development, point of view, characterization, setting, and point of view.
If you’ve done your job right, you have imbued the whole of your story with your theme, and—I want to emphasize this again—the theme you are moved to write into your story influences the choice of every element in your memoir.
