Skiing Big Sky’s blue cruiser - “Big Horn”, January 2022

Big Horn is a blue run accessible from the Ramcharger lift at the top of the Andesite Mountain. I wouldn’t classify it as a cruiser, at least on this day. I had studied the run on Google Earth and Fatmap as well as watched another Youtube video, and the run appeared somewhat steep but silky smooth. It turns out that they hadn’t groomed it in quite awhile so lucky for me, the run was choppy and bumpy. Unfortunately you couldn’t realize this until you were well over the main hump and committed, and I wasn’t about to hike all the way back. Things got even worse when you got around the horn. Compounded with severely choppy terrain, you also get the pleasure of dealing with flat light all the way to the lift. I’m sure a better skier would probably think nothing of it. It’s a bit tough to watch as I struggle pretty much down the entire length of the choppy steeps. You can still get a good glimpse of what the run looks like and what you might expect to see. It begins at elevation 8,800 feet and spans a total of roughly 1780 vertical feet over approximately 1.7 miles with a 25% max. pitch.
