Extreme cars tend to engender
Extreme cars tend to engender extreme reactions. And since Lamborghini’s new Aventador SVJ Roadster — the open-top version of the track-worthy coupe — is on (or near) the top rung of the excessive ladder, its very presence on streets will garner everything from fawning praise and abject lust, to derision and scorn. This the latter conflict centres around the fact the 6.5-litre V12 engine, situated behind the cabin as per customary supercar layout, punishes the road with 770 horsepower, outrageously more than can ever be safely used anywhere but on a race circuit. There’s legitimacy to both reactions, but face it, nothing Lamborghini makes is for introverted, shy, retiring types.
And given the sunny day in this California desert haven, with temperatures that encourage open-air driving, it’s best to postpone the philosophical discussions of passion versus ego, and simply enjoy. Besides, it’s almost impossible to be rational; one glimpse of the SVJ Roadster’s jet-fighter looks — the origami-creased wedge shape bedecked with massive air scoops, an ironing board-sized rear wing and generous dollops of carbon fibre — and its intent is crystal clear. Even reciting that passage from The Lord’s Prayer — “lead us not into temptation” — will likely be of little effect.
