Live data from a Cambridge/University of Iceland seismic station at Melhóll, close to Hagafell and moreorless directly above the recent magma intrusion. Note due to the high sensitivity and proximity of the sensor to the seismicity, very small earthquakes will look quite big (and many events seen at this station will not be seen at enough other stations to be located!). Data is around 10 seconds behind real time, so you will have to wait for vedur.is / vafri.is/quake to catch up.

Waveforms show vertical (up/down), north-south and east-west ground velocity, recorded at 100 samples per second. Spectrograms show the frequency content of these waveforms (note you will see many very small events as sharp packets of high frequency energy, which are difficult to see on the waveforms), with red colours indicating high power (or energy) at a given frequency. The continuous low-frequency signal is the oceanic microseism (from oceanic swell colliding with the shore!). Higher frequency signals are generally related to seismic activity, though can also be caused by wind.

Data telemetry set up in collaboration with the Icelandic Met Office and ÍSOR (Iceland GeoSurvey) in November 2023. Sensor is a Güralp 3ESPCD broadband seismometer.
