Cholera is an infectious disease that causes severe watery diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration and even death if untreated. It is caused by eating food or drinking water contaminated with a bacterium called Vibrio cholerae. Vibrio cholerae is a gram negative, comma-shaped bacterium. The bacterium's natural habitat is brackish or saltwater.
Cholera toxin (also known as choleragen and sometimes abbreviated to CTX, Ctx or CT)
It is a enterotoxin secreted by bacterium Vibrio cholerae.
Genes for cholera toxin are present on the integrated phage genome.The gene encoding the cholera toxin is introduced into V. cholerae by horizontal gene transfer.Cholera toxin is a oligomeric/multimeric complex made up of six protein subunits- A-Subunits (A1 and A2 Part) and Five B Subunits.
A-Subunit has catalytic property (enzymatic).Result of cholera- massive, watery diarrhea.Single copy of the A subunit(enzymatic), and five copies of the B subunit (receptor binding), denoted as AB5.

Once inside the enterocyte, the enzymatic A1 fragment of the toxin A subunit enters the cytosol, where it activates the G protein Gs alpha (Gαs)  through an ADP- ribosylation reaction that acts to lock the G protein in its GTP-bound form.The ADP-ribosylation causes the Gαs subunit to lose its catalytic activity of GTP hydrolysis into GDP + Pi, thus maintaining Gαs in its activated state. Thereby  leading continually stimulating adenylate cyclase to produce cAMP.
