11. SOUNDBITE (English) Rabbi Mendel Moscowitz, camp manager:
“There is no refugee camp in Israel, right? The Israeli people are good people they are helping each other, but because of the Ukrainian war, because this was created for the Jews running away from the war in Ukraine, we were ready when the war started. Israel were ready to accept, in a week-and-a-half, we were at 200 people. People heard about it and then they came here right away. So, it is amazing that this place was ready to accept such amount of people in such a short time.”

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Eva Kopolovich, Jewish refugee from Israel:
“The place I live at is a closed military area now. So, we can't go home until we get a permit to go home. But we don't have a permit to go. I hope this war is going to be over and we will be able, because they're afraid that what happened in Gaza is going to happen to us. Although where I live is in northern border, we have the Hezbollah, which doesn't like us very much.”

17. SOUNDBITE (English) Rabbi Slomo Koves, Chief Rabbi for the Association of Hungarian Jewish Communities:
“Slaughtering you because you are Jewish, no matter who you are, what you are, what you believe in, is something that never happened in the history of the state of Israel. And it really brings back those worst feelings of all of us. And I think that's something which definitely Israel failed on doing, the premise that it was built on. And that's why it's so important to reassure and to confirm to all of us that Israel will continue to stand up for the premise and that such a thing would never happen again.”

STORYLINE:
Jewish refugees from the war between Israel and Hamas are finding safety in an unused lakeside resort in the Hungarian countryside.

Many of them had earlier fled the conflict in Ukraine when Russia invaded in 2022.

Zusha Pletnyov and his family left their home in the eastern Ukrainian city of Luhansk in 2014, when Russian-backed rebels seized large swaths of eastern Ukraine.

After living some years in the capital, Kyiv, they fled again to Israel when Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in February of last year.

An observant Jew, Pletnyov moved with his wife and five children to Ashkelon, just miles from the Gaza Strip, in the hopes of building a new life.

The camp is equipped with detached housing units and a central building where three kosher meals are served per day.
