In 1906, the city of Puławy received city rights. In 1915, Russian and then Austrian troops left the city. During World War I, Puławy suffered significant damage. In the interwar period, industry began to develop, and in place of the former Agricultural Institute, the State Scientific Institute of Agricultural Economy was established. The city was ethnically diverse, with Poles, Jews and Russians living here, as well as followers of Christianity, Orthodox Christianity and Judaism. The development of the city was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II, in which a third of the inhabitants died. In 1944, Puławy was captured by the Red Army and the Home Army soldiers collaborating with it. The victims of World War II are commemorated by the Monument to the Fallen and Murdered, unveiled in 1963 at the war cemetery.
