The Chechen people's Islamic steadfastness is extraordinary, where the Muslims still hold fast to their faith even though they have been suppressed, deprived of their rights and oppressed in the era of the Soviet Union.
Islam began to spread in the Chechen region in the 14th to 15th centuries. Islam was brought by the citizens of Dagestan, a region that is a neighbor of Chechnya, especially the Kumyks. The name of the tribe is taken from the plains where these Turkic people live.
The spread of Islam also occurred because of the relationship between the Chechens, the indigenous people of Chechnya, with the Kabardinians, Nogays, and Crimean Tatars. Meanwhile, in Ichkeria and Ingushetia, Islam began to dominate in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Islam continued to survive despite conflicts with the rulers of the Soviet Union. Even in a 1991 survey, as many as 94 percent of Chechens consider themselves Muslim.
