Salamanca’s university is where Christopher Columbus got permission for his fateful trip. Portugal’s university in Coimbra is a beautiful World Heritage Site. The oldest universities in the world began as madrasas. They taught Islamic religion and grammar. Many of them, including Al-Azhar in Egypt, have since expanded their offerings. Historical universities have educated the greatest minds in the world. They’ve withstood centuries of wars and attacks to keep teaching students today.
