BYD Atto 3 with plenty of power: 150 kW/204 HP, 310 Nm

Good range: 420 kilometers (WLTP), 349 kilometers in the test

Three equipment options: Prices from 44,625 euros

BYD? No, you don't have to know it yet - at least in Europe. As a Chinese you would know exactly: BYD (pronounced in English: Bi-Wei-Di) is the world's second largest manufacturer of electric vehicles, having sold a total of more than 3.3 million units worldwide by the end of 2022.

And now BYD is making the leap into Europe. Currently on offer in Germany: the seven-seater electric SUV Tang, the sporty luxury sedan Han (both around 70,000 euros) and the compact crossover SUV Atto 3 (from 42,245 euros), which the ADAC engineers have subjected to extensive testing.

In Germany, the Swedish Hedin Group has taken over the distribution of the cars, opened the first premium stores in Frankfurt and Cologne and signed seven larger BMW and Mercedes dealers as sales and service partners.

The Atto 3 is the first BYD model in the lower middle class in Europe, where the fully electric competition from VW ID.3, Cupra Born, Hyundai Kona Elektro, Kia Niro EV or MG4 is still relatively manageable. And on the same electric platform 3.0, the small car BYD Dolphin will be coming this year as an alternative to the Peugeot e-208 and Opel Corsa-e and the Seal as the new Tesla Model 3 fighter. BYD sets the market in motion.

349 km range in the test
The 420 kilo battery is completely hidden in the underbody and is relatively flat thanks to blade technology with vertically stacked cuboids. BYD states the gross capacity as 60.5 kWh, which with a consumption of 19.7 kWh/100 km in the ADAC Ecotest, i.e. including charging losses, ensures a range of 349 kilometers. The Atto 3 is therefore relatively efficient. AC (from the Comfort version onwards) is charged in three phases with 11 kW in around six hours.

It's faster with direct current via CCS; However, charging from ten to 80 percent takes a rather long time compared to the competition at around 46 minutes. The Atto 3 is therefore not really suitable for long distances. In the test, the average charging power was 65.2 kW, with a maximum of 88.6 kW possible at short notice.

The BYD Atto 3 is fun to drive© BYD
And how does the new Atto 3 drive? In short: great. The ADAC engineers attest that it has very good starting and overtaking behavior despite its curb weight of 1,772 kilos. The engine accelerates extremely quickly from a standstill with a torque of 310 Nm. It goes from 80 to 120 km/h in a quick 5.9 seconds. Acceleration to country road speed (from 60 to 100 km/h) is completed in a brisk 4.4 seconds. The speed limit starts at 160 km/h.

When it comes to lateral dynamics, the Atto 3 has a bit of a problem with its raised body, soft chassis design and high tire sidewalls. In the ADAC avoidance test, this resulted in pronounced rolling movements and only average steering precision when driving through the pylons.

However, the strong power, which is even more direct in the Sport gear mode, has consequences: the wheels of the front-wheel drive car spin quickly and can only be controlled with difficulty by the traction control system - an effect that is of course increased in wet conditions. The BYD is largely convincing when it comes to braking performance. For emergency braking from 100 km/h to a standstill, the average of ten attempts results in a more than decent stopping distance of 35.1 meters. The response and controllability of the brake in everyday use is only satisfactory due to the quite long pedal travel and the doughy pedal feel.

The safety equipment is complete. Emergency braking, lane keeping, high beam or cross traffic assistant, traffic sign recognition, ACC or speed limiter: everything on board. The high standard safety level of the Atto 3 has also been officially certified by Euro NCAP: its 5 stars are not a given. In the ADAC test it received a very good grade of 1.1.

The BYD warranty offer is fair: 4 years or 120,000 kilometers on the vehicle, 8 years or 200,000 km on the drive battery.
