The grand Prelude in e is an impressive realization of the Stylus Phantasticus. The constant change of affect lends the works an improvisational character, while, at the same time, two constrasting longer fuguer provide for formal cohesion. The first fugue is marked by a quiet chromatic subject with rhythmically constrasting counterpoints, and the second is a gigue with a syncopated subject.
