The ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation) BHN disaster in Mumbai, India occurred on July 27, 2005. A massive fire broke out on the exploration platform, which was owned and operated by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation in the Bombay High North (BHN) oilfield, located approximately 160 km off the coast of Mumbai.
The fire started after a blast on the platform, triggered by a high-pressure oil and gas mixture. It was reported that there were 384 workers on board at the time of the incident, out of which only 364 were rescued. The remaining 20 workers were feared to have been trapped and lost their lives in the incident.
The rescue and firefighting operations were quite challenging due to the remoteness of the location and adverse weather conditions. The fire continued to rage for several days before finally being brought under control.
The ONGC BHN disaster was a significant tragedy and highlighted the need for strict safety measures and regulations in the oil and gas industry. It led to investigations and subsequent improvements in safety protocols to prevent such accidents in the future.
