Silver Soldering Brass to Brass with a Propane Torch and SSF-6 Silver Brazing Rods

SSF-6 melts at a lower temperature than most silver solders, allowing you to make repairs without warping the base metal.  Mike uses a propane torch to join the 2 pieces of brass, but a MAPP gas or oxyacetylene would work as well. Always clean the metals well before starting the soldering process. The flux is the key to a strong bond, porosity-free joints, and a higher flow rate. When the parent metal is heated correctly, the rod will work in all positions. avoid turning the metal to a cherry red. The solder flows best at a dull red color. The SSF-6 will even work on old cast iron exhaust manifolds. Make sure to clean the scale off the manifold. Grind down to shiny cast iron for the best result.

The SSF-6 will join cast iron to stainless steel. Metal artists use the 56% silver alloy to join a variety of dissimilar metals at high strength. Use warm to hot water and a wire brush to remove the flux residue. This unique flux allows the rod to bond to three times the amount of non-flux coated alloys. The flux coating also allows non-stop brazing throughout the job at hand. No need to pull the torch away and grab more flux between deposits. The rod can be bent slightly to get into hard-to-reach areas.

SSF-6 is as strong as a MIG, without grinding or machining.  Notice the beautiful end result.
